About the app

Rockhounding Map shows rock, gem and gold collecting sites from public mineral records, with who manages the land at each one. It covers Oregon to start. Open the app and the map is there, with no sign-up.

Tap a site to see what's listed there, its land manager and a plain note on what's generally allowed, with a link to the agency's own rules. When you have a signal, turn on the land ownership layer or USGS topo and satellite maps, check the forecast, and get directions in Apple Maps or Google Maps.

In the field, the terrain map and the sites keep working without a signal. Log your finds with a photo and notes, save your own spots, and export your log as a spreadsheet. Your location, finds and spots stay on your iPhone. The sites come from historical records, so treat the app as a guide, not legal advice: check current rules, closures and mining claims with the land manager before you go.

Rockhounding Map is a guide, not legal advice. Collecting rules change: check with the land manager before you collect, and never enter old mines.

What it does

Features

  1. Collecting sites on a map

Gem, agate and jasper sites and gold placers from public mineral records, grouped on the map. Filter by what you want to find, or show public land only.

  2. Who manages the land

Each site shows its land manager, such as the BLM or the Forest Service, with a plain-language note on what's generally allowed and a link to the agency. Sites we can't confirm as public are marked unverified.

  3. Works without a signal

The terrain map and the site data are stored on your iPhone. The USGS topo, satellite and land ownership layers and the weather forecast load when you have a connection.

  4. Find what's near you

See sites sorted by distance, search for a town or type coordinates, and get driving directions in Apple Maps or Google Maps.

  5. A private find log

Log each find with a photo, notes, the date and the place, pinned on your map. Export the whole log as a CSV spreadsheet.

  6. Your own spots

Long-press the map to save a spot of your own, save the sites you like, check the forecast for a place, and share a site or spot with friends.
